Winter Activities!
By Dr. Alanna Kuhn, ND
Participate in Winter Activities! It’s time to come out of hibernation Kingston. Fall in love with winter again! February is Heart Health Month and what better way to get your heart pumping than to participate in some local winter activities. You could hike over 150km of breathtaking trails at Frontenac Provincial Park or lace up your skates at Market Square skating rink, which is free to the public and open daily from 8:00am until 10:00pm. Tired of walking? Why not strap on a pair of snowshoes or cross-country skis and head to Little Cataraqui Creek Conservation Area. For under $6 you can spend an entire day connecting with nature while burning a lot of calories.
Did you know that one hour of winter hiking can burn as much as 450 calories? Regular exercise is key to being heart healthy. It reduces your stress level, lowers your blood pressure and LDL (bad) cholesterol level and in turn reduces your risk for many serious health conditions such as heart disease, type II Diabetes, and cancer. So get out there and participate in the many activities Kingston has to offer – snow and all!
