Use Natural Mouthwash!

Originally published on the Kingstonist.com. Use Natural Mouthwash! As I mentioned last week, April is National Oral Health Month so this week I encourage you to make your own mouthwash. Store bought oral rinses often contain synthetic flavourings, aromas, and colours, not to mention a number of harsh chemicals. A study published in the Dental Journal of Australia in 2008 actually found a link between long-term use of alcohol containing mouthwash and an increased risk of oral cancer. Creating your own is easy and cost effective. I like this recipe by Jacob and Betsy Jabs found online or in their book diyNatural Household Cleaners. Ingredients:

  • ½ cup filtered or distilled water

  • 2 tsp baking soda

  • 2 drops tea tree essential oil

  • 2 drops peppermint essential oil

Combine the above ingredients into a container and mix. “Baking soda will settle to the bottom of the jar when not in use, so be sure to shake mouthwash before each use.  Swish about 2-3 teaspoons of this homemade formula in your mouth for a minute or two”. Happy rinsing!
